This article is for EarthRanger site administrators. After your site upgrades to EarthRanger Identity, user management is split: users handle their own sign-in and you continue to manage site access and permissions in EarthRanger.

What stays the same?
The EarthRanger admin tools remain the place for everything about what users can do on your site.
You still manage roles and permissions, activate and deactivate users, and oversee profile accounts in the same place as before
What's new: passwords are self-service
Users who sign in with their email address control their own password. You can no longer set or reset it on their behalf.
If a user can't sign in and needs to reset their password, direct them to the sign-in screen and ask them to select Forgot password?. They'll receive a reset link at their email address and can create a new password themselves.
If a user needs further assistance, contact support@earthranger.com.
Profile accounts
Profile accounts let one authenticated user temporarily act as another identity in EarthRanger. For example, a manager hands a device to a ranger in the field, who is selected as a profile and unlocked with a PIN.
Profile accounts are managed in EarthRanger and are not affected by EarthRanger Identity. They work exactly as before.
If a profile user later needs their own sign-in — for example, to log in independently — they can be promoted to a full email-based account while keeping the same EarthRanger user record and history.
Local (managed) accounts
For users who can't use an email-based sign-in, local accounts can be created and managed by the site administrator. This feature is coming soon.
