Setup Gundi engineering

Everywhere Communications connects your Garmin inReach radios to EarthRanger through the Everywhere Hub. Ranger locations and messages appear on your EarthRanger map, and messages written in EarthRanger reach the radios in the field.

This integration requires configurations in the Everywhere Hub, Gundi, and EarthRanger. Please contact us at support@earthranger.com and we’ll guide you through the process to ensure everything is set up correctly.

Prerequisites

Everywhere Communications

You will need:

  • An Everywhere Hub account with your Garmin inReach radios.
  • The messaging Username and Password for your account, provided by Everywhere Communications.

Gundi

You will need:

EarthRanger

You will need:

  • Admin access to EarthRanger.
  • A special EarthRanger user with permissions to post observation data and messages.
  • A long-lived token for the special user.

Please refer to EarthRanger's documentation or contact Support.

Configurations

A single Route in Gundi carries both directions of this integration:

  • Everywhere to EarthRanger — locations and messages from the radios reach EarthRanger.
  • EarthRanger to Everywhere — messages written in EarthRanger are delivered to the radios. This is the arrow that goes back from EarthRanger to InReach on the Route's flow map.

1. Create the Route in Gundi

1.1 Log in to Gundi and click Create Route.
1.2 Select Garmin InReach.
1.3 Select your Workspace and enter a Route Name (e.g., Everywhere to ER). Leave all other fields empty and click Next.
1.4 Click Add destination on the flow map and select your EarthRanger site. Please consult our guide.
1.5 On the flow map, click the InReach node and open the Connect API key section. Copy the API Key; you will use it in the next step.

2. Everywhere Hub — radios to EarthRanger

2.1 Send Everywhere Communications the address below, with [apikey] replaced by the API Key you copied in step 1.5:

https://hooks.gundiservice.org/webhooks?integration_type=inreach&apikey=[apikey]

2.2 Everywhere Communications adds this address to your Everywhere Hub account. Once it is in place, you should see your radios as subjects with their latest locations on the EarthRanger site.

3. Enter the Everywhere messaging credentials in Gundi

3.1 Back on the Route's flow map, click the InReach node and open Connection Credentials.
3.2 Fill in the fields:

inReach Portal Connect (IPC) Inbound API: https://gateway.evywh.com
Username: Username provided by Everywhere Communications
Password: Password provided by Everywhere Communications

3.3 Click Save.

4. Turn on the flow back to the radios

4.1 On the flow map, click the arrow that goes from your EarthRanger site back to the InReach node (or its Configure Flow button).
4.2 In the panel that opens, turn Sending ON. The arrow becomes solid.

Route flow map with the EarthRanger to Radios arrow enabled and the Sending toggle turned on

5. Copy the EarthRanger API Key

5.1 On the flow map, click your EarthRanger node and open the Connect API key section.
5.2 Copy the API Key; you will use it in the next step.

6. Configure EarthRanger

6.1 Log in to the admin site.
6.2 Go to Source Providers.
6.3 Search for the source provider created for this integration (i.e., gundi_inreach_integrationid).
6.4 Enable Two-way messaging:

6.5 Click Save.

Where the Source Provider comes from

The Source Provider is created automatically after Gundi receives data from the radios and sends it to EarthRanger (step 2). If you don't find it, please review the Route Activity Logs for additional details.

7. Everywhere Hub alerts

Alerts from the Everywhere Hub can also appear in EarthRanger as events, for example:

  • Emergency entered and exited
  • Check-in OK, check-in not OK, and missed check-ins
  • Geofence entered and exited

Contact us at support@earthranger.com and we’ll set up the alerts for your EarthRanger site together with Everywhere Communications.

Note on Latency

The time it takes for data to appear in your destination system depends on several factors, such as latency introduced by the source, network conditions, and intermediary systems. While these factors may vary, Gundi typically checks for available data at scheduled intervals (approximately every 5 minutes).

If data is not available in your system after this interval, please check the source of the data for its availability. If the issue persists, contact our Support team for assistance.

Characteristics

This is a "Push" type integration, meaning your data provider sends data to Gundi on their own schedule (for example, immediately or every 5 minutes), and Gundi then forwards it right away to the destination specified in your Route.

Only fresh data will be processed by Gundi, but a request can be made to the data provider for historic data.

Troubleshooting

Contact the Gundi team and share the name of your Everywhere Hub account and the list of device IMEIs.
